Writer. Teacher. Advocate.

I believe that empathy and advocacy can take us places we've been unable to reach utilizing the soft skills typically associated with leading.

Both in the ways in which I approach writing and teaching, I center empathy.

Below, you'll find a variety of my strongest work, including short fiction, creative nonfiction, and nonfiction. You'll also see the biographical page where you can learn more about who I am.

Interview of Sheri P. Hall

“I came across Black Girl Shattered during a search for uplifting poetry targeted toward women and black women. The novel is not exactly what I expected, experimental in structure. The prose is direct and palpable, encouraging the reader toward look inwardly as the speaker of the work does. We find that, yeah, maybe we’re not as perfect as we present ourselves toward be. Maybe we’re in need of returning toward wounds that our past selves allowed to scab over. Black Girl Shattered tells us to go back, remove the festering scab, and rub balm over it.”

Interview of RJ Howl

“R.J. Howell was interviewed in October 2019 via Hangouts, an alternative that was resorted to when Skype refused to function properly. The way the interview proceeded can best be compared to the office space that housed the computer she used: hectic, exciting, and brimming with sheer personality. Bookshelves covered in paper lined the back wall along with a tall, lean clock that according to Howell, ‘doesn’t actually work.'”

About Bernice (Bernie) Luo

One of the most common interview questions is "tell me about yourself. Something that isn't on your resume." Here is my answer to that:

I am an early-to-mid career professional specializing in creative writing and English literature. The first book I ever wrote was at ten years old, called The City of the Black Rose, which was mostly an amalgamation of all of my favorite TV shows and games.

I attended high school in Macon, Georgia, a small town just south of Atlanta; I graduated with honors in 2013. Themes of small-town living and the simplicity of nature present themselves often in my creative work.

I studied political science, desiring to specialize in international relations which led me to studying abroad in Japan. After graduating in 2017, I was long-listed as a JET ambassador through the Japanese Embassy but life has a way of changing in the most unexpected ways. I found myself living in China instead and gradually began to return to creative writing.

I graduated with honors from Columbia College Chicago with an MFA in Creative Writing in 2023. Ever since, I've had the pleasure of growing my professional network and increasing my perspective.

Since 2017, my perspective has undergone seismic changes. I believe in leading with empathy in everything that I do. As global citizens in 2025, everyone has the responsibility to understand themselves and work every moment to understand others.

I currently work as a substitute teacher while pursuing my PEL.
